Oils ain’t Oils: Top tips for selecting a mobile service

BM Team
By Paul Tozer, Telstra Business Centre

For most businesses on the Sunshine Coast, mobile connectivity begins with a handset, or, now more commonly, a PDA such as a Blackberry or Palm Treo.

There is a huge range of handsets available, providing a choice and solution for every business need. Of course, their real potential is unleashed by adding a mobile data pack, to enable more flexible (and cost effective) access to the mobile internet, email and efficiency tools like synchronised calendars.

At the next level, there is mobile internet access for laptops, either by using a compatible mobile as a modem, or via a selection of USB Modems and PCMIA wireless access cards. This provides all the computing power of a desktop, with the high speed internet service and access to essential files, applications, email and business tools via a secure VPM connection.

Businesses can work on the go – from cafes to client premises – and be on their mobiles at the same time.

The benefits for business

Maintaining productivity out of the office is vital for many businesses. Whether they’re between meetings or working from another location, a high speed network connection makes it possible to work more efficiently, help stay in touch with colleagues and clients, and minimise downtime.

A recent study commissioned by Telstra and conducted by Concept Economics found that businesses have been quick to grasp the benefits of a high speed network.

Most companies interviewed saw that a high speed network increased productivity through:

•    Improved staff mobility and accessibility
•    Reduction in paperwork and the double handling of information
•    Reduced downtime for mobile staff
•    Increased mobile reliability and coverage
•    The ability to access operations in near real time
•    The ease of setting up and operating a mobile office or remote work location
•    Scope for remote site monitoring

Businesses on the Sunshine Coast should consider the entire mobile service offered by their provider including network speed, coverage and services to ensure they are getting a product that suits their needs.

Businesses should be aware that just like oils ain’t oils, not all mobile services are the same.

Having a reliable service is essential. Not only are you paying for the service, but many of us rely on our mobiles to stay connected with our business and keep in touch with friends and relatives.
